COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course addresses the mechanics of black and white photography.  From basic camera operation and exposure (through the use of shutter speed and aperture adjustment) to film processing and negative printing, students will gain the tools necessary to become a beginning photographer.  Students must provide their own manually adjustable 35mm camera.   

 

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The student will…

1. Understand and apply the elements and principles of design to their photographs. 

2. Learn the parts and proper use of a 35mm camera. 

3. Learn and follow correct studio and darkroom safety procedures.

4. Create dynamic compositions when looking through the viewfinder. 

5. Learn to process film, use the enlarger, and develop black and white photographs. 

6. Formulate her/ his own unique way of communication using the visual language of art.

7. Experiment with various techniques and processes.

8. Explore the effective ways that others have solved similar problems throughout history.

 

EXPECTATIONS:

“Striving for Excellence”

The goal is to create a quality art program that promotes student success.  An individual of high school age should be aware of what constitutes socially acceptable behavior along with the responsibilities and consequences that accompany such behavior.  In this art room students are expected to be courteous to others, follow safety procedures at all times, follow instructions given by the teacher, stay on task from bell to bell with assigned work, complete all projects to the best of your ability by the date that it is due, and clean up thoroughly each day.  Failure to abide by these conditions will affect the daily grade and/or may result in disciplinary action.  Let’s work together to have a great class!

 

ESSENTIAL:

  • Check board each day for the daily objectives, project goals, and homework.
  • Use time effectively in order to complete assignments on time. 
  • Follow school wide expectations.

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

35mm SLR Camera (no digital cameras), pencil with an eraser.

 

EVALUATION:

Evaluation and grading for this course will be based on the following:

Daily lab grade, class projects, written class work, and final exam.

A significant portion of your total grade for this course is the daily grade.  A weekly grade of 0-10 points will be given to each student based on participation, using class time effectively from bell to bell, clean up practices, following given guidelines for the assignment, and following safety procedures.  This is a lab class and if you have an excused absence you are responsible to make up any work for full credit up to two days for every day absent.  If you have an unexcused absence, you are responsible to make up any work for half credit up to two days for every day absent.  Labs may be made up during the semester by appointment before or after school and/or class.  Lab hours outside of class time are available to students to complete course requirements.

90-100% = A

80-89% = B

70-79% = C

0-69% = F

 

SUBJECT MATTER

All work must be appropriate to be accepted for grading.  Images must not contain sexual content, drug/ alcohol/ gang references, violence, etc. 

 

ATTENDANCE:

  • Class starts when the tone sounds, then the door is locked.  You must be in the room before I close the door.  If you arrive after the door has been shut, you should proceed to the office for an admit slip. 
  • The school attendance/ tardy policy will be followed.  If you are absent or tardy you may be subject to a conference, detention, and/ or dismissal from class without credit. 

 

HALL PASSES

During class time, no passes will be given out to use the phone or vending machines.  Student passes will be issued on a limited basis.

 

CELL PHONE/ HEADPHONES/ ELECTRONIC DEVICES

No electronic devices will be permitted in the classroom or hallway.  These items will be confiscated and turned in to the office.
