After the Civil War, the nation struggled to restore the southern states to the Union and determine the status of the freed slaves. the Radical and Moderate Republicans, the former slaves, and the planter aristocracy had conflicting goals for Reconstruction. Throughthe Union was restored, full and equal citizenship for African Americans was not acheived.
