In December 1941 the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, bringing the U.S. into World War II. Americans and the allies battled the Axis powers on land in Europe and North Africa and on sea in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Mediterranean. By August 1945 the Allies defeated the Axis powers, but only after heavy casualties and the atomic bombing of two Japanese cities.
