Projects Complete 4 of the following projects and submit them through email. 25 points each.

Alcatraz-research the infamous prison and prepare a report on its history. Identify some of the myths associated with it. Why does it continue to be a top tourist destination? Identify several of the more famous inmates.

Warden - Do some job hunting; research warden’s positions and locate the related job description. Summarize what you learned in a short report and identify (1) the professional experience requirements, (2) educational requirements, (3) general duties and responsibilities, and (4) salary and benefits package.

Supermax - Research supermax prisons. Provide a brief description of what your research revealed about these facilities (about a paragraph). Are these structures the most secure within the correctional system? Are there plans to build more? How many supermax prisons are in operation in the U.S. today?

Kansas – Identify the number of state and federal prison facilities located in Kansas. Briefly provide an overall description of the prison type (e.g., minimum, maximum, or supermax) and identify whether or not any of them house female offenders. Are any of the facilities private? 

Juvenile Corrections – Select a section of the Offender Rulebook, attached to the class website. Provide a brief description of what the section includes. The first page of the manual instructs offenders to read the entire manual. How many do you think actually do? Why?

National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility –Visit the DHS website at the address listed here and read about the facility being built in Manhattan Kansas. What is the purpose of the facility, why does it fall under the umbrella of Homeland Security? Why is it located in Manhattan Kansas? What risks does the facility pose for the local population? http://www.dhs.gov/files/labs/editorial_0762.shtm

DHS Mission Statement – Read the mission statement of the Department of Homeland security and provide a brief analysis of each section (A-G) listed. Explain whether each section could/should be revised, clarified or removed completely. Provide your overall analysis of the departments mission statement. Is it clear? Does it include too many areas for the department to be effective?
