Miss Jeanie is our education coordinator. She is currently working with our teachers to implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum for reading, math, science and social studies. The teaching staff are in their second year of using the "Reading Street" curriculum published by Scott Foresman. This is the same reading series adopted by USD 204 and is preparing our students for a smooth transition into the kindergarten programs. The curriculum uses reading as the foundation to include math, social studies and science activities into their lessons. This can be done through playing in a center, working in a large or small group activity or creating a project individually. The staff has developed a checklist for each student based on the Head Start Framework, the Kansas Early Childhood Standards and the skills the USD 204 kindergarten teachers have requested that the children be exposed to. The teaching staff and Miss Jeanie have developed two checklists - one for 3 year olds and one for 4 year olds (see attachments below). The information on each child is entered in the ChildPlus database and reports are generated that indicate what each child's strengths and stretches are. The teachers also have access to whole class reports as well as center reports. From this data, they are able to individualize at the class level as well as see where we as a program need to improve our curriculum. This is our first year of using the checklists so we will be analyzing how we can improve them with input from the parents at the parent/teacher conferences in April. |
