Getting Started
This year a team from Baldwin HS won the National Challenge - to see a picture of the team receiving their trophies at Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC, go to KSDE's webpage at
http://www.ksde.org/Default.aspx?tabid=3780
The challenge is not for the faint-of-heart - It requires real fortitude! - However, the rewards are great.
We want to urge you to enter a team for the 2010-2011 Challenge for next year. You can even do it now. (You can add or drop team members as circumstances dictate next year.)
The Challenge provides over $900,000 worth of free software. The key software provided is Pro/ENGINEER. This software is very powerful and is used by many engineering companies, including those in the aerospace industry. The only way for your students to really learn the software is for them to actually use it. We suggest either you register a team now or the first of the 2010-11 school year and have the students practice on the 2009-2010 Challenge. (We understand the 2010-2011 Challenge will also be in the aerospace field.) The free on-line training for coaches/teachers will remain available (at
http://www.realworlddesignchallenge.org/Teachers.html
) so you can make yourself familiar with the software this summer.
The Challenge is like a working on a real engineering project. Students said that working on the Challenge brought real meaning to what they were learning in school. As with a real engineering project, the team will need to include more than students who can run CAD programs. In addition to students who can run the CAD program your team will need to include a student who is the project manager, one or more with expertise in math, others who will do research on aerospace design, and one who can prepare a professional presentation (a key element of the National Challenge) using PowerPoint or other software.
If you have questions or would like suggestions, please contact us.
