BOYS & GIRLS  PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH

2010-2011 

THE PURPOSE OF BONNER SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH PROGRAMS IS FOR ALL STUDENTS TO ACQUIRE A KNOWLEDGE BASE FOR WELLNESS THAT ENCOMPASSES SOCIAL, PHYSICAL, AND MENTAL HEALTH.  STUDENTS WILL FURTHER APPLY THIS KNOWLEDGE GAINED THROUGH PARTICIPATION, STUDY AND INVOLVEMENT IN A WIDE VARIETY OF EXPERIENCES
RESULTING IN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.  STUDENTS WILL BE MOTIVATED TO ANALYZE AND ADAPT THEIR WELLNESS CHOICES TO THEIR CHANGING ENVIRONMENT AND THEIR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS THROUGHOUT THEIR LIFETIME THROUGH FITNESS, SPORTS, RECREATION, NUTRITION, KNOWLEDGE OF BODY SYSTEMS, SAFETY AND FIRST AID, AND PERSONAL HEALTH AND HYGIENE.  THIS IS A PARTICIPATION CLASS, STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO DRESS OUT AND PARTICIPATE EACH AND EVERY DAY.

OBJECTIVES:

STUDENTS WILL DEMONSTRATE COMPETENCY IN MOTOR SKILLS AND MOVEMENT PATTERNS NEEDED TO PERFORM A VARIETY OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES.

STUDENTS WILL DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING OF MOVEMENT CONCEPTS, PRINCIPLES, STRATEGIES, AND TACTICS AS THEY APPLY TO THE LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITES.

STUDENTS WILL PARTICIPATE REGULARLY IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

STUDENTS WILL ACHIEVE AND MAINTAIN A HEALTH-ENHANCING LEVEL OF PHYSICAL FITNESS

STUDENTS WILL EXHIBIT RESPONSIBLE PERSONAL AND SOCIAL BEHAVIOR THAT RESPECTS SELF AND OTHERS IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY SETTINGS

STUDENTS WILL VALUE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR HEALTH, ENJOYMENT, CHALLENGE, SELF-EXPRESSIONS AND/OR SOCIAL INTERACTION.


ACTIVITIES THAT WE WILL COVER DURING THE COURSE OF THE YEAR:

FITNESS TESTING, FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL, HOCKEY, VOLLEYBALL, PICKLEBALL,
SOCCER, PING PONG, SOFTBALL, SWIMMING, ULTIMATE FRISBEE, TENNIS.

HEALTH:  DRUGS, FITNESS AND NUTRITION, REPRODUCTION, STD’S AND AIDS.

GRADING:

THE SEMESTER GRADE WILL REPRESENT AND AVERAGE OF THE TWO QUARTER GRADES AND SEMESTER TEST.

STUDENTS WILL BE GRADED ON THREE AREAS:

1. SKILLS TESTS.  SKILLS TESTS WILL INCLUDE BASIC ABILITY SKILLS TESTS OVER SELECTED ACTIVITIES, FITNESS EVALUATIONS, AND CLASS TOURNAMENTS.
2. WRITTEN TESTS.  WRITTEN TESTS WILL COVER RULES, STRATEGY, SAFETY HANDOUTS, HEALTH UNIT, ETC.
3. DAILY PARTICIPATION AND ATTITUDE.  DAILY PARTICIPATION INCLUDES ARRIVING ON TIME, DRESSING OUT, FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS AND PARTICIPATING IN ACTIVITIES.

SINCE DAILY PARTICIPATION AND ATTITUDE CONSTITUTE THE MAJORITY OF A STUDENT’S GRADE, IT IS CRITICAL THAT THEY PARTICIPATE AND MAINTAIN A HIGH DAILY PARTICIPATION GRADE.  STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EARN 5 POINTS EACH DAY FOR THEIR PARTICIPATION AND ATTITUDE.  POINTS WILL BE DEDUCTED FROM THE STUDENTS FOR ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:

#  NO GYM CLOTHES
# NOT DOING MAKE UP WORK
# NON OR LITTLE PARTICIPATION
# LATE FOR ROLL
# IMPROPER GYM CLOTHES
# JEWELRY
# PART OF UNIFORM MISSING
# PROFANITY
# UNEXCUSED ABSENCE

ANY STUDENT WHO DOES NOT DRESS OUt 5 OR MORE DAYS IN A SEMESTER WILL RECEIVE AN AUTOMATIC “F” FOR THAT SEMESTER REGARDLESS OF WHAT THEY RECEIVE ON WRITTEN AND SKILLS TEST.

TARDY POLICY:
1. 1ST TARDY= 15 MINUTES AFTER SCHOOL DETENTION
2. 2ND TARDY= 3O MINUTES AFTER SCHOOL DETENTION
3. 3RD TARDY= 60 MINUTES AFTER SCHOOL DETENTION
4. 4TH TARDY= 1 DAY OUT OF SCHOOL DETENTION
5. 5TH TARDY= 2 DAYS OUT OF SCHOOL DETENTION
6. 6TH TARDY= 3 DAYS OUT OF SCHOOL DETENTION
7. 7TH TARDY= PARENTAL CONFERENCE AND POSSIBLE LOSS OF CREDIT OR LONG TERM SUSPENSION

*****A STUDENT IS CONSIDERED TARDY IF THEY ARE “NOT” IN THE LOCKER ROOM WHEN THE BELL RINGS.  THE DOOR WILL BE LOCKED IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE BELL.  STUDENTS ARE TO REPORT TO THE OFFICE FOR A TARDY PASS.  STUDENTS WILL THEN BE ALLOWED TO RETURN TO CLASS.  IF A STUDEN IS OVER 10 MINUTES LATE FOR CLASS, THIS WILL BE CONSIDERED AN ABSENCE!  THE TARDY POLICY IS LOCATED ON PAGE 6 OF THE STUDENT HANDBOOK.

MAKE UP POLICY:

IF A STUDENT IS ABSENT FROM CLASS, THEY ARE REQUIRED TO DO MAKE-UP WORK IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN THEIR DAILY POINTS.  STUDENTS MUST MAKE UP EVERY DAY THEY HAVE AN ABSENCE OR NURSE’S EXCUSE (THIS INCLUDES NOTES FROM PARENTS, DOCTORS, AND ANY SCHOOL RELATED FUNCTION.  EACH DAY A STUDENT IS ABSENT OR CAN’T PARTICIPATE DUE TO INJURY, DOCTOR’S APPOINTMENT, ETC., THEY MUST TYPE A ONE PAGE PATER (350 WORDS) OVER SELECTED TOPICS RELATING TO SPORTS, FITNESS OR PERSONAL HEALTH.  STUDENTS WILL HAVE TWICE THE NUMBER OF DAY THEY WERE ABSENT TO COMPLETE AND TURN IN MAKE-UP WORK FOR FULL CREDIT.  ANY MAKE-UP WORK TURNED IN AFTER THE ALLOTED TIME WILL BE GIVEN HALF CREDIT FOR THEIR WORK.  STUDENTS MAY NOT MAKE UP WORK FROM A PREVIOUS QUARTER, ONCE THE QUARTER OR SEMESTER IS COMPLETE.


THINGS TO REMEMBER THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

1. ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION T-SHIRT AS REQUIRED BY THE DISTRICT GUIDELINES.  ATHLETIC SHORTS, WHITE SOCKS AND TENNIS SHOES ARE A MUST.  STUDENTS ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO NOT WEAR THEIR SCHOOL CLOTHES FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION.  THIS IS A HYGEINE ISSUE AND SEVERAL TEACHERS HAVE  EXPRESSED CONCERN IN REGARDS TO THE “CLEANLINESS” ISSUE OF STUDENTS ATTENDING THEIR CLASSES FOLLOWING A PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS.
2. STUDENTS WILL BE ISSUED A COMBINATION LOCK TO KEEP THEIR BELONGINGS.  PLEASE DO NOT BRING CD PLAYERS OR ANY VALUABLE ITEMS TO SCHOOL BECAUSE THEY DO TEND TO DISAPPEAR FROM TIME TO TIME.  REPLACEMENT LOCKS WILL COST THE STUDENT $6.
3. ALL STUDENTS WILL REMAIN IN THE LOCKER ROOM UNTIL NOTIFIED BY THE INSTRUCTER.  FAILURE TO COMPY WILL RESULT IN THE STUDENT BE
CONSIDERED AWOL.
4. A STUDENT IS ALLOWED 4 NON DRESS OUTS A SEMESTER.  ON THE 5TH THE
STUDENT WILL AUTOMATICALLY FAIL THE SEMESTER.

Parents, guardians and students, I have read and understand the course syllabus as well as the expected class procedures.  I understand that by not following any of the expected procedures, points may be deducted from my quarter and semester grades leading to and failing or dropping the course.

2.  2nd Non Dress Out:  Sit in ISS Room - All daily points deducted - phone call home.

3.  3rd Non Dress Out:  Insubordination:  Office Referral - Sit in ISS Room - Phone call home - All daily points deducted.

4.  4th Non Dress Out:  Insubordination:  Office Referral - Sit in ISS Room - Phone call home - All daily points deducted.

5.  5th Non Dress Out:  Withdrawn from course - Fail Semester - Sit in ISS Room for Remainder of the semester.
