Last Thursday and Friday, 8th grade students in Mrs. Van Cleave's Science class created a “Tornado in a Bottle” as part of their Catastrophic Events unit. Students researched how a tornado vortex forms and observed how rotation creates a visible funnel. They then connected this investigation to engineering by discussing how buildings can be designed to better withstand tornado-force winds.

At February's Bonner Springs/Edwardsville Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon, the Chamber continued its partnership with USD 204 to sponsor the Teacher of the Month program — recognizing outstanding educators who go above and beyond for their students, schools, and community.

Megan Mellring, Special Education teacher at Bonner Springs Elementary, was recognized as the February Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Month!

In her three years with USD 204, Megan has made an extraordinary impact on her school community. As both a District Teacher Leadership Academy Member and Building Leadership Team Member, she is deeply involved in shaping inclusive and innovative learning experiences for all students.

Her dedication extends far beyond the classroom. Megan founded the Girls on the Run program at Bonner Springs Elementary—an initiative that has reached more than 80 students in just two years. Through this program, she empowers girls to build confidence, teamwork, and lifelong healthy habits.

Colleagues admire Megan’s flexibility and selflessness—most recently demonstrated when she stepped into a different role to support a long-term substitute teacher, ensuring that every student continued to receive exceptional instruction and care.

Megan’s enthusiasm, adaptability, and devotion to her students exemplify true leadership, and we proudly congratulate Megan Mellring as the February Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Month!

USD 204 Board of Education Approves Andrea Stipe as Edwardsville Elementary Principal

The Bonner Springs/Edwardsville Board of Education approved the appointment of Andrea (Andi) Stipe as the Edwardsville Elementary principal beginning in the 2026-2027 school year at their meeting Monday evening. Stipe will replace current principal Nancy Julo who has resigned, effective at the end of this school year.

Stipe comes to Edwardsville from the Ottawa School District where she has served as principal of Sunflower Elementary School since 2019, and before that as Assistant Principal and Curriculum Administrator at Turner School District for six years. She also has 10 years experience as a classroom teacher and spent eight years as a building, then district, ESOL Coordinator for Turner School District.

“My goal is to foster classrooms where students take ownership of their learning through clear success criteria and meaningful feedback loops, ensuring that high expectations are met with high support,” Stipe said. “I believe that a school thrives when leadership, data, and rigorous instruction intersect to support every learner.”

Mrs. Stipe is planning an event this spring to meet staff, students, and parents at Edwardsville Elementary. Additional details will be shared at a later date.

USD 204 Superintendent Rick Moulin said, “We are thrilled to have Mrs. Stipe join our Edwardsville Elementary team. USD 204 Board of Education Approves Kyle Joyce as Bonner Springs High School Principal

The Bonner Springs/Edwardsville Board of Education Monday night approved the appointment of Kyle Joyce as Bonner Springs High School principal beginning in the 2026-2027 school year. Joyce will replace principal Don Hilliard who will retire at the end of this school year, after 10 years with the district.

Joyce was born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas and is a graduate of Sumner Academy of Arts and Science. He began his teaching career in 2013 at Quindaro Elementary in USD 500, making his way into an administrative position by 2019. After working as a Restorative Justice Specialist and Assistant Principal/Athletic Director, Joyce currently serves as the Assistant Principal of the Media Communications Academy at Wyandotte High School.

“I am deeply honored to serve as the next principal of Bonner Springs High School,” Joyce said. “I believe strong schools are built on meaningful relationships, high expectations, and a relentless focus on student learning. My commitment is to work alongside our teachers, staff, students, and families to create an environment where every student is challenged, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential. I am excited to join this community and look forward to building on the school’s strengths while continuing to grow instructional excellence together.”

“Hiring a high school principal is one of the most important decisions we make, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome Mr. Joyce to Bonner Springs High School,” USD 204 Superintendent Rick Moulin said. “After surveying staff and gathering input from both teachers and students, Kyle consistently demonstrated strong instructional leadership, thoughtful communication, and an authentic ability to connect with students.
