USD 204 is proud to partner with the Bonner Springs Edwardsville Area Chamber of Commerce to celebrate our amazing educators! 🌟 Each month, one outstanding teacher will be honored at the Chamber luncheon for their dedication and positive impact on our schools, students, and community. We’re excited to announce the first award of the 2024-25 school year goes to Dawn Sommers! 🎉 Dawn, a FACS (Family and Consumer Sciences) teacher at Bonner Springs High School, brings 20 years of experience as a technical designer in the fashion industry to her role. Now in her 13th year at BSHS, she has taught everything from culinary arts to fashion and interior design. She also played a key role in establishing the Fashion Apparel Interior Design pathway at BSHS after helping set up the new pathway at the state level. Her decision to transition to teaching came from a desire to guide and support students, especially those needing extra encouragement. "I decided to transition into teaching so I could help many kids who needed direction, and someone in their corner, and to teach them how to survive in this world with real-life skills." Dawn recently earned her food service certification, allowing USD 204 to offer students the chance to gain their own certifications before graduating. 🎓 Dawn was presented with her Teacher of the Month award at the recent Chamber luncheon. A big thank you to our local businesses and community supporters for honoring our teachers and bridging the gap between school and community! 🧡 Stay tuned as we recognize more amazing educators throughout the year!

4th graders at Bonner Springs Elementary had an amazing day at BizTown! 🏙️ After learning about economics in class, students had the opportunity to run their own city, take on jobs, make and spend money, and learn what it means to be a great citizen. BizTown is an extension of the Junior Achievement program, a curriculum centered on work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. Such a fun, hands-on way to bring classroom lessons to life!

We had the honor of surprising the district's two nominees for the Kansas Horizon Award in their classrooms today! Through reviewing staff, student, and parent feedback along with building administrator recommendations, the district selected Ali Mohney, FACS teacher at Clark Middle School, and Sarah Alas, 2nd grade teacher at Delaware Ridge Elementary, to represent USD 204 in the 2025 program. The Horizon Award, sponsored by the KS State Department of Education, identifies and recognizes representatives of excellent teaching in the elementary and secondary classrooms having completed their first year of teaching in a PreK-12 Kansas school. Congratulations to our BRAVE educators! Both are excellent representatives of their schools, our district, and the community.
