Disc Golf Course Ribbon Cutting

Bonner Springs High School hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on September 15th in celebration of the newly established disc golf course on the school's campus.

The project was managed by the BSHS KAY Club (a KSHSAA organization that focuses on community service and leadership) in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas. Students applied for a ‘Be the Spark’ grant through Blue Cross with the goal of promoting physical fitness and wellbeing in their school and within the community.

KAY Club sponsor, Jen Stricherz, says the project gave students a good look at how vital teamwork is in accomplishing any goal. “This project was a huge undertaking because it involved our club members thinking about the project and writing the grant. Once we received the amazing grant our course engineer Sergio Valenzuela drew up numerous maps for our course. After the course map was finalized our district maintenance team was able to install all the baskets. We are still not quite done since we need to mark the tee boxes but we have a few seniors interest in taking that project on as their senior project so we are confident that will be completed by late fall!

KAY Club would like to thank all those involved in this project including Katlin Bryan, the Be The Spark Project Coordinator, who has worked with us for 3 years on this project, the USD 204 BOE, Dan Brungardt, Rick Moulin, and Dough Hitchcock who supported us when we came to them with the idea of applying for this grant, and our BSHS teachers that are encouraging our students to learn about Disc Golf and providing students the opportunities to use the course during their school day.”

The course is open to the community outside of school hours.
