Inclement Weather Policy

The goal of the district is to always provide a safe and secure environment for students. However, living in Kansas means at times school will be held even when it is extremely cold and/or when roads are snow-covered.

Before a decision is made about whether school is closed or delayed, employees of the district test drive areas of Bonner Springs, Edwardsville and the Delaware Ridge community. From year to year, the cities of Bonner Springs, Edwardsville and Kansas City, KS do an excellent job keeping streets and roads maintained. This allows the district to stay open when other area schools are closed.

When the decision to close school must be made, the district will try to make this information available as early as possible. The district will send out an official announcement via Skylert (our parent communication portal). To make sure your information is correct, log onto your Skyward account and update your email address/phone number under the 'Skylert' section. Announcements will also be made via the district social media pages.

In most cases, the decision we will be faced with will be to either close school for a day or decide that conditions allow for school to be in session. Occasionally however, the district may choose to delay the start of the school day by two hours. This option will only be used in cases of extreme cold temperatures or other weather related issues. At times, a delayed start in the school day is a better option as opposed to canceling school altogether. The schedule below reflects the procedures for a delayed start.

2-Hour Delayed Start

Elementary Start Time Start at 10:30 AM
Secondary Start Time Start at 9:45 AM
McDanield Preschool Center No AM Classes
PM has class
Buses  Run 2 hours late
Breakfast Not served

YMCA of Greater Kansas City Inclement Weather Procedure
In the event USD 204 closes due to inclement weather, the YMCA will not operate programs in district facilities (this includes before and after school Y Care). During circumstances when a late start has been called, Y Care will not operate during morning programs. As a result of a late start day, Y Care will operate as normal only in the afternoon.
